You're offended by me calling it alien like? Why do you think so lowly of aliens? I bet you've never even meet an alien!

Seriously dude, *thats* *what* *it* *looks* *like*.

Disagreeing is fair grounds but at some point the swear mixture gets a bit too rich.

I agree it doesn't take much to become familiar with block system. Sadly I've heard "Is that chinese?" too often. I can hardly blame the speakers since they are trying to be friendly.

I wouldn't say that it is a difference between letters vs blocks but rather the fact that when presented with an asian text the average North American will have determined that discerning it is a task for expects.

Interesting post. It never occurred to me that people had trouble distinguishing between the three languages. I was born in HK & raised in Aus and took Chinese school when I was a kid, though most of that is out the window now, I can still recognise Chinese when I see it. I figure anyone who has even a vague understanding of any of the three languages, they could probably distinguish what language is what. Maybe it's related to recognition; westerners (yes, blanket generalisation) are more used to recognising letters, whereas east asians are more used to recognising, thus distinguishing, block characters.
I agree with you about Korean tho. It does look alien ;]
