Hhhmmm, I really should get more sleep, its just sooo tempting to fix just "one" more thing. My sleep hours have really suffered because of it. I think I know what you mean though, once you've left it all the sudden you remember that one thing that might be causing the problem.

I think a few things happen to give us that insight over time. As you mentioned, our skillsets improve, but on top of that, once we're faced with a problem, when we "give up", I think only the outside, conscious mind gives up. I suspect that there's a deeper part of our unconscious mind that continues to grind away at a problem that we haven't solved.

My family used to laugh at me because when I came up against something that I couldn't solve, I'd go to bed. I've slept my way into so many solutions that I don't even know the number anymore.

When we concentrate so hard on something that we're focused entirely, tunnel vision takes over. We literally can't think of innovative solutions because we've got tunnel vision tuned into whatever the problem is. Focusing on something else helps our mind relax. I think of it sort of like a muscle cramp. It's pulling so hard that it doesn't work right any more. Once the muscle relaxes, you get regular usage out of it.

Great, insightful post.
